In 2012 we had a full summer of fun, teamwork and achievement when over 70 people volunteered over 17 weeks to deliver Doohamlet’s PEACE III Community Garden. Designed by Barry Kavanagh, and assisted by the project co-ordinator Dara Mac Gabhann, developing the community garden brought real community spirit to our area, developing friendships, connections and memories that will last a lifetime.
Over the past number of years the garden has matured and developed. Running alongside a babbling stream in the grounds of Doohamlet Community Centre, the garden is a tranquil place to spend some time.
The garden is open at all times and anyone can call in to spend some time in the natural surroundings – please be aware there is open water and children must be supervised. The water quality in the river is excellent and it’s an ideal location to try to pond dipping during the summer months when the water level is low. Bat Conservation Ireland has run events here and there is plenty of bat activity along the river from dusk.
The garden is maintained with the assistance of the Monaghan County Council Community fund, and benefited from a Local Environmental Action grant in 2020.
